In the New Orleans area, PACE seeks to convert sacred spaces into community places through the utilization of closed churches and historical structures as its centers. The use of historical buildings preserves architectural treasures in local neighborhoods. On the Westbank, PACE will make its home on the Hope Haven Campus. PACE will first move into the old school building, renovating it for usage as a senior facility. The school building will be equipped with a clinic, kitchen, therapy center, offices, and activities space. It will be developed with state of the art equipment for participants as well as for PACE staff members.
The proposed PACE Westbank site is located at 1139 Barataria Boulevard on the Hope Haven Campus in Marrero, Louisiana. The historic structure was built in 1932 in accordance with the Spanish colonial revival style of the rest of the campus and covers approximately 16,198 square feet. The structure was donated to PACE GNO by the Archdiocese of New Orleans in August 2009. PACE is funding the planning and development portion of the PACE Westbank expansion project through a Baptist Community Ministries grant. All zoning issues have been resolved such that PACE will be able to operate as needed. A floor plan and scope of work for the larger renovation project have been developed by Blitch Knevel Architects. PACE GNO has begun its fundraising efforts, which include pursuing potential individual and family donors, grants from national and local foundations, and federal budget appropriations.
